While most major media outlets in the United States have been focused on the US debt ceiling debate and Standard & Poor’s recent downgrade of the US credit rating, a humanitarian crisis has been raging in the horn of Africa.  According to the United Nations, famine has already killed tens of thousands in Somalia, the majority of whom are children. This food shortage has been exacerbated by long-term political instability in the region as well as very low rainfall totals and rising food prices.

In the 21st century, it really is inexcusable for so many innocent people to suffer because of a lack of basic necessities, especially when we enjoy such a superabundance of food and clean water in this country.
